Oh, what a marvel we have here! The idea of amplifying a resonator guitar has crossed the minds of countless musicians, of course, but in 2010, National took things a step further with a model line (discontinued in 2020) that truly broke new ground: a solid-body electric resonator. What a blast! The Reso-Tone is a genuine crossover instrument, offering a truly unique sonic experience, or rather, a sonic revelation. More than just a guitar with a distinctive personality, this little American-made gem combines the unmistakable character of a National resonator with the versatility of an electric guitar. Warm and articulate, it delivers a precise attack and boasts an absolutely one-of-a-kind look.
Construction is delightfully straightforward, almost rustic, yet flawlessly executed. The lightweight alder body, maple neck and rosewood radiused fingerboard with pearl dot inlays make for a simple but highly effective recipe, take note, Fender! The original frets are in excellent condition and provide outstanding playability. A bone nut, 1 3/4″ nut width and a slightly flattened oval neck profile lend the instrument a vintage feel while maintaining thoroughly modern comfort. Comfort is not always the strongest point of resonator guitars, but this one is genuinely a pleasure to play. Compact and lightweight, it offers excellent freedom of movement and remarkable playing comfort.
The Lollar “Special” Telecaster-style neck pickup gives the guitar a sweet, clear vintage voice when amplified. Its intermediate mounting position avoids excessive muddiness and overdrive. Fitted with a wound G string (highly recommended), the overall tone becomes wonderfully swingy and evokes the character of 1950s semi-hollow guitars. It doesn’t exactly sound like a traditional resonator guitar, but it also departs from the typical solid-body voice, allowing some of the cone’s harmonics to subtly shine through the pickup.
This 2012 instrument belonged to an excellent guitarist and comes to us in outstanding condition, with no dings, scratches or signs of wear. It is supplied with its original hard case and accompanying paperwork.
